Born of frustration.
built for action.
Trump’s revenge campaign keeps getting worse. DEFIANCE.org was started because people kept asking us:
“What can I do?!”
With a thousand nonprofits and impact groups out there, the answer often feels overwhelming, or worse, like shouting into the void. Someone needed to create a hub to make it simpler.
But “hub” sounds stupid. So we created a club for courageous Americans — people willing to take peaceful, lawful, defiant action to defend democracy from a wannabe dictator.
We provide Members with regular answers to the above question. That’s it.
-
We’re focused on moving fast to help where it matters most.
Members pledge a monthly contribution — from $1 to $1,000 — to fuel real action. Each month, we hold a private briefing on the best ways to fight back, and you choose which missions to support. Together, we direct funds to existing, proven organizations doing urgent work, and we organize real-world actions around them.
-
Things are changing fast. The point of a supporting an array of groups is to make sure we’re going where the fight is — and where support is needed. One month that might be protests and another it might be lawsuits. Our recommendations are curated by some of the best pro-democracy experts in the country.
We also think it’s important to “keep it lean.” Over 90% of every dollar goes straight to the causes our members choose. The rest helps us grow the network of defiant Americans and do rapid response when a crisis hits.
If we don’t act together, we’ll be targeted alone.
-
Right now, speed and survival matter.
We launched DEFIANCE as a social impact organization — not a tax-deductible 501(c)(3) — so we could move fast, take louder stands, and avoid restrictions that limits what traditional nonprofits can say or do.
That means we can call out politicians by name, speak the raw truth, and respond instantly to threats by supporting a vast array of groups.
We still operate with nonprofit ethics and with binding legal rules prohibiting us from profiting. All proceeds go directly to mission-driven work. We have zero interested in building a bureaucracy — we’re building a movement.
-
Our priority will be to support groups that also give you the option to get involved beyond just funding their extraordinary work. That might mean contacting Members of Congress, showing up to protest an unlawful action, writing a personal note to a target of Trump’s revenge, or hosting an event in your community.
In the near future, we also hope to provide an option for new orgs and projects to propose fresh ideas for the DEFIANCE community to fund.
-
Right now, we’re run by a tiny team of mostly volunteers.
Two friends — Miles Taylor (a former official targeted by Trump) and Xander Schultz (founder of Defeat by Tweet and One for Democracy) — decided to stop waiting around for someone else to build this and just do it. They’ve put in their own time and money to get it moving.
If you’re looking to get more directly involved, we urge you to support the groups that we recommend. DEFIANCE.org itself will remain lean to focus on supporting on-the-ground action.
