DEFIANCE.org Endorses National Campaign to Hold Trump’s Corporate Enablers Accountable
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In its inaugural Weekly Spotlight event on Wednesday night, DEFIANCE.org drew thousands of LIVE viewers and endorsed a new national campaign to expose and hold accountable the corporations enabling Donald Trump’s ongoing assault on American democracy. Watch the replay here on YouTube.
The live-streamed event — hosted by former CNN anchor Jim Acosta — featured a lineup of civic leaders and cultural voices, including Oscar-winner Robert De Niro; former House Majority Leader Dick Gephardt; former U.S. attorney Joyce Vance; former GOP Congressman Joe Walsh; LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter; and more.
At the heart of the evening’s program was a major announcement: DEFIANCE.org is partnering with WeAintBuyingIt.com and the Save America Movement (SAM) to shine a spotlight on corporate complicity in Trump’s abuses of power. The initiative aims to call out companies that have bowed to political pressure, censored dissent, or contributed to anti-constitutional actions.
One past example highlighted during the program: Disney’s consideration of removing Jimmy Kimmel from the air over his public criticisms of Trump — a move widely seen as a capitulation to political intimidation.
To support the efforts of WeAintBuyingIt.com and SAM, DEFIANCE.org announced $50,000 in planned contributions toward those partner organizations as they work to challenge corporate-enabled abuses of power and to defend civil rights and civil liberties.
“This is not just about boycotts,” said DEFIANCE co-founder Miles Taylor, a former Homeland Security official turned whistleblower. “It’s about creating a public reckoning. Corporations shouldn’t get a pass. They need a demand signal from consumers that now is the time for courage, not capitulation.”
Speaking by phone at the event, actor Robert De Niro called on Americans to defy intimidation. “[Trump] sues people. He intimidates universities. He intimidates law firms. The one, big thing is intimidation. And people sometimes don't realize that and let that happen.”
The Oscar-winner explained why he and other public figures are speaking out. “This is my country. I want my country back. I don't want it to be taken away by some idiot, some fool, some predators. Sometimes you don't want to have to do these kinds of things, but there's no other way to do it, but to stand up, be firm, push back, and keep pushing back until they stop.”
Members of DEFIANCE.org — a grassroots community dedicated to defending American democracy — were briefed during the event on how many consumers will use the upcoming Black Friday shopping season as a moment to take peaceful action against corporate enablers of Trump’s lawlessness.
The campaign encourages consumers to:
Examine which brands are supporting anti-democratic actors
Avoid retailers that suppress speech or media freedom
Reward companies that stand up for the rule of law and the Constitution
